Introduction

A long time ago I knew I’d write. I had been writing stories since I was in sixth grade. “Fast” was the name of my first novel and even at the tender age of twelve I wanted to reflect the dramas of the inner city, the inner turmoil that had become common to man and the struggles that turned people into survivors.

A year later I had come to know Jesus Christ as my Savior and by that time he began to become the Lord of all things and not just some…including the four other novels I had written. The characters of those days have been buried on files that could not be recovered on modern day computers but in between then and now I have met some unbelievable believers. Their lives and testimonies have captured me and their stories have become etch-a-sketched onto my heart. Before I even decided to create stories based on the lives of these wonderful people, I had become the greatest fans of their lives and more importantly the greatest fan of the Author who wrote it.

Throughout my walk God has revealed to me that a pen to me would be like a staff to Moses. My desire in writing this series is not to glorify the individual but the One True Living God who makes the individual glorious. Just as Moses set his people free, my prayer is that you would find freedom in the lives of these stories. My prayer is that with the same courage that it took to split a sea in two, you’d find to split whatever sea stands before you.

This is part one of an ongoing series. Although based on the true story of a very dear friend, Olivia Luciano—names have been changed, some things have been taken away and other things added. Ultimately my prayer is that your life will be transformed, as was Olivia’s, as she became Beauty from Ashes.

Isaiah 61:1-4

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.
